About me

I have been writing product software since 2017, both the interface and the API behind it. I have worked in logistics, recycling and consultancy, and in all three the work started the same way: working out which business problem was underneath before writing any code.

I pay a lot of attention to what a demo never shows. How the application behaves on a mid-range phone, what happens when something fails, whether someone with a disability can use it. The same thinking led me to offensive security: I now combine development with pentesting and bug bounty, and hunting for flaws in other people's applications has changed how I build my own.

I lead the technical team at MDB Tech Solutions. I make the architectural decisions and still write code every day.

Areas of work

Custom development, from the first definition through to going live. I take on whole projects and I also join teams that are already running.

  • Web development

    Applications and sites in React, TypeScript and Astro. I treat performance and accessibility as requirements from the start, and I check Core Web Vitals and technical SEO before every release.

  • Mobile development

    Cross-platform applications in React Native on a single codebase, published to the App Store and Google Play. I set up the release cycle so updates can go out regularly.

  • Back-end development

    REST and GraphQL APIs in Node.js, Python and Django, with data modelling in SQL and NoSQL, authentication and third-party integrations. Infrastructure runs on AWS and I deploy from CI.

  • Cybersecurity

    Pentesting of web applications, APIs and mobile applications, always on authorised targets. I document every finding with its proof of concept, a reasoned severity rating and what needs changing to fix it. I also take part in bug bounty programmes.
